A magnitude 4.8 earthquake hit Tewksbury, New Jersey, Friday at approximately 10:30am. Tremors were felt all the way from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania out to the eastern tip of Long Island and up as far north as Hartford, Connecticut and south to Hancocks Bridge, New Jersey.

The other most recent earthquake affecting the New York metro area was back in 2011 when a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck, but that epicenter was in Virginia.

Earthquakes are not common on the east coast, but occasionally they do happen. Since 1950 there have been about 20 quakes with a magnitude above 4.5, according to the United States Geological Survey.
