Fires Putting New Jersey Pine Barrens at Risk

According to recent reports, New Jersey wildfires continue to consume acreage, up to 4,000 acres primarily in southern New Jersey. The fire went from burning up 500 acres by 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday to nearly 4,000 acres by Wednesday.

The area under siege by these wildfires is located in Manchester Township, which includes approximately 170 different structures. So far, the fire has not damaged any structures and no injuries have been reported. The fire, though, is extremely volatile, presenting challenges for those firefighters tasked with putting it out.

A number of reports came in citing 200-ft-high flames, which produced a rain of embers.

Most of the area that was burning is located on federal, state and private property but it had penetrated the borough of Lakehurst.

The present forecast does not include any rain in the near term, which is unfortunate. April is typically a dryer month for the state of New Jersey. In addition to the dry conditions, and low humidity, the region is being smacked with sustained winds of 15 mph and gusts up to 25 mph.
