It’s not a job; it’s a solution.

Oftentimes when conversations begin with individuals for the first time, the question will come up, What do you do? The answer may come out: I’m a doctor, I’m a lawyer, I’m a personal trainer, I’m a high-school teacher. And of course in our business, we have over 1 million people who will tell others that they’re real estate agents. But that doesn’t tell them the most important aspect of what you do for them. It tells them a title not a solution.
Those ‘canned’ descriptions don’t do you any good. Remember, that they are not so interested in what you do, they’re interested more in what they do so it’s simply a conversational handshake, and it does very little to ignite a discussion.
In every interaction, especially where it has business ramifications, you want people to come away with more than just a title; you want them to come away with the solutions you provide to everyday problems.
For example, as a real estate agent, telling prospective buyer or seller that real estate is all about location, location, location only puts you at the bottom of the pile, not on the top of the pile.
As an agent, what I might tell someone is, I specialize in selling homes to families who are looking for a better life.
You might even be so bold as to say, for me real estate is all about neighborhood, neighborhood, neighborhood. Neighbors make the location; it’s not the other way around.
If you’re in the title business, one of the ways that you could describe what you do is, when people buy a home, the last place you want a glitch is at the closing table.
You can even say, glitches are bound to happen, but anticipating them and solving them before everybody comes to closing is what I like to do best.
When a slice of the pie is bite size, it’s more digestible and tastes even sweeter. That’s what it’s about when someone asks you what you do for a living.
