Probably the first key to negotiation is to speak last. Just because you speak last doesn’t mean that you get what you wanted, but it usually points to the fact that speaking last reflects how the negotiation was resolved. A negotiation coach will instruct you to get the other side to make the first offer for a couple of reasons: first, they may offer you more than you were anticipating. If you ask for less, you have just negotiated against yourself.

Second tip is don’t be afraid to ask. The saying goes, you have not because you ask not. Believe it or not, many people never negotiate because they are afraid to ask.

Third tip is know what you are looking for. Flexibility is when you can give other people what they want while getting what you need. If price is the obstacle, create options where there are choices, good choices, that they can choose from. Never be desperate. Be willing to walk away with grace. The willingness to discuss price is actually a good sign that may lead the way to a second opportunity in the future.

Fourth tip is to do your homework before the negotiation. Know what you are worth, and know the value-added of your product or service. Have at least 3-4 hardcore facts about what you will deliver.

Fifth tip is never make the other person the loser. Negotiation is about discovering how two are better than one, and how you are helping that other person achieve their objective. Satisfaction is ultimately what you promise to deliver. If you don’t, you have already lost.
