Successful real estate professionals understand an important truth: people don’t simply buy homes—they buy homes while living increasingly busy and distracted lives.

New data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ American Time Use Survey provides valuable insight into how Americans are spending their weekdays and weekends. For REALTORS®, lenders, attorneys, and everyone involved in the home-buying process, understanding these changing patterns can help improve communication, marketing, and customer service.

The Weekend Has Become Prime Relationship Time

During the workweek, Americans spend more than four hours each day working. On weekends, that drops to just over one hour.
Where does the extra time go? Nearly two additional hours are devoted to leisure and recreation. Americans also spend more time sleeping, socializing, watching television, attending religious services, and completing household projects.

For real estate professionals, this means one thing: weekends are no longer just showing days—they’re relationship days. Clients are more relaxed, spending time with family, visiting local communities, attending events, and exploring neighborhoods. They are often more receptive to conversations about lifestyle rather than simply discussing square footage and mortgage rates.

Agents Sell the Lifestyle, Not Just the House

Homebuyers aren’t simply purchasing a property. They’re choosing how they want to spend their time.

Today’s buyers often ask themselves: Can I walk to restaurants?

■ Is there a nearby park?
■ Are there community events?
■ Can I bike, fish, or kayak nearby?
■ Is this a neighborhood where my family can build relationships?

Communities with vibrant downtowns, farmers markets, county fairs, waterfronts, walking trails, and local festivals often become more attractive because they align with how people actually spend their free time. The lifestyle surrounding the home has become nearly as important as the home itself.

Television Still Dominates Attention

The study found that Americans spend more than three hours each weekend day watching television or streaming content. While this may seem unrelated to real estate, it highlights an important marketing reality. And consumers are spending enormous amounts of time-consuming digital content.  That means your online presence matters.

Professional photography, short neighborhood videos, educational content, community spotlights, market updates, and helpful social media posts are increasingly becoming a prospective buyer’s first showing. Long before someone schedules an appointment, they’re often evaluating both the property and the real estate professional online.

Weekends Are for Community

One encouraging finding is that Americans spend significantly more time socializing on weekends. This presents a tremendous opportunity for REALTORS®.

Rather than focusing exclusively on listings, agents can become trusted local resources by sharing information about:

  • Community events
  • County fairs
  • Farmers markets
  • Local restaurants
  • Charity events
  • School activities
  • Parks and recreation
  • Small businesses
  • Seasonal festivals

People don’t simply move into homes. They move into communities. The agents who consistently introduce clients to those communities often become long-term trusted advisors.

Household Projects Create Opportunities

Americans also devote more time on weekends to housework, maintenance, shopping, and home improvement projects. For real estate professionals, this creates another opportunity to provide value. Maintaining a network of trusted contractors, landscapers, painters, plumbers, electricians, inspectors, and home service providers allows agents to remain helpful long after the closing table. The transaction may end. The relationship should not.

Timing Matters More Than Ever

The survey also reminds us that timing plays an increasingly important role in communication. Busy professionals may have little opportunity to engage during working hours but become much more responsive during evenings and weekends. That doesn’t necessarily mean sending more messages. It means sending better messages at the times your clients are most likely to appreciate them. Respecting your clients’ schedules demonstrates professionalism and builds trust.

The Human Connection Still Wins

While technology continues to transform real estate, this study reminds us that people still value relationships. They spend weekends reconnecting with family, attending community events, participating in recreational activities, and improving their homes. These are exactly the moments when homeownership becomes more than a financial investment—it becomes part of a person’s lifestyle and identity. The most successful real estate professionals understand that they are not simply helping clients buy or sell property. They are helping families discover communities where they can build memories, friendships, and a future.

At Counsellors Title Agency, we’ve always believed that every successful closing represents the beginning of a new chapter. Understanding how people live—and how they choose to spend their time—helps every member of the real estate community provide better service, stronger relationships, and an exceptional client experience.
