Find Wall Studs—No Tools Required
You might be surprised at just how easy it is to locate wooden studs hidden behind drywall. All you need is a magnet. And yes—we know wood isn’t magnetic. This simple method works by detecting the metal screws that fasten the drywall to the wooden studs.
You don’t need anything complicated, but you do need a magnet strong enough to detect those hidden screws. Small rare earth magnets are ideal, especially the pushpin-style ones that are easy to grip and move across the wall. It’s also helpful to have more than one magnet on hand—and here’s why.
Putting Magnets to Work
Start by moving a magnet slowly across the wall. When you feel it pull or stick slightly, you’ve likely found a screw—and, in turn, a stud. Leave the magnet in place to mark the spot.
Next, use additional magnets to locate more screws above or below that first point. As you place them, you’ll begin to see a vertical line form. This line reveals the path of the stud from floor to ceiling, giving you a much clearer and more reliable guide.
