We live in a distracted economy filled with texts, pop-up ads, Google ads, and every other form of invasive information. Our minds are at war with the information that we are drowning in. People are so connected to their smartphones and devices that they find they are “electronically naked” if they don’t check their phone 90 times a day. Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, headlines, YouTube, not to mention text ads and phone calls.

So how as a businessperson do you function and flourish in such an information-intense environment?

I think what’s happening now is people are becoming more and more selective in what they look at, what they subscribe to and what they listen to. Now that we are getting back to in-person meetings, one of the impacts of the pandemic is we have also created a very robust virtual economy. Communicating via Zoom, video and text is commonplace. And people are finding that multitasking is not an effective approach to task management. They are looking for ways to be more focused on their daily tasks.

Attention Matters
Getting someone’s attention is a victory today. But keeping their attention takes talent and intentionality. What I am suggesting is some practical strategies, backed by science, to fight against the erosion due to distraction.

So in order to navigate this new economic geography, we are going to have to adjust our strategies and our behaviors, and plan our communication initiatives with greater intentionality, recognizing that scarcity of attention is only going to get worse moving forward.

But this is not all bad news: there are some good ways that technology is going to help us, that being in the case of Zoom calls. What I have noticed is most people, when they get on a Zoom call, have various backgrounds behind them. Some of them may have pictures, some may have bookcases, trying to impress people with their intellectual appetites, some may even have views out the window of their vistas and their landscapes.

But I think we can do better.

What I am including in this article are several Zoom backgrounds that help people not only focus on you as a business professional but also subliminally digest the messages that you want them to.
