Independence Day or July 4th has been a federal holiday for only 81 years. But the nation has always made sure that the actual day when the Declaration of Independence was signed was honored.
The root of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution, when on July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence.
The actual document, drafted by Thomas Jefferson and edited by Ben Franklin, became official on the 4th of July.
