For the fifth consecutive day New Jersey has been smoked out by the wildfires of Canada raising air quality levels to hazardous levels. And the smoky conditions are expected to linger for at least the next couple days. According to the Department of Environmental Protection, the hazardous air conditions hit the most dangerous levels in 43 years.
All of these problems would be mitigated were there just a single healthy rainstorm in the forecast, but unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be one in the near future.
Standard health protocols such as staying indoors, limiting the number of outdoor activities and making sure if anyone has any health conditions that would be affected by the hazardous air to stay indoors. All health alerts are in effect for all 21 New Jersey counties.
The counties showing the most hazardous air quality as of 7:30 Thursday morning are Middlesex, Mercer, Camden, Atlantic and Cape May.
The Weather Service is projecting that better quality air will arrive by the weekend. Unfortunately, AccuWeather is suggesting that the smoke from the Canadian wildfires will linger into next week.
Closures
Several New Jersey school districts will be closed on Thursday or will have an early dismissal due to the smoke. The schools will also be canceling all outdoor recess activities. In addition, the free concert scheduled for this Thursday night at PNC Arts Center has been canceled.
