Because of the various droughts throughout the country, a number of major forest fires are contributing to the poor air quality that seems to cloud the entire state.
The haze of smoke is coming from fires in Quebec, Canada, and even in Jackson Township. These blazes are contributing to the poor air quality we are experiencing this week. According to the U.S. EPA, New Jersey’s air quality index climbed as high as 178 on Wednesday due to the particles that are floating throughout the entire atmosphere. The index goes from 0 to 500, and 178 is considered to be an unhealthy level.
Individuals especially sensitive to such conditions are the very young and the elderly, those individuals with compromised immune systems, and those with heart and lung conditions. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection cautions individuals with such conditions to stay indoors as much as possible, and keep all windows closed.
Some of the signs of poor air quality are headaches, irritated eyes, fatigue, difficulty breathing and even chest pains and asthma attacks.
And even visibility is actually being affected by the particles within the air.
Forecasters are pointing to a lower level of particle density to start to occur on Thursday, but the haze may continue for some time as well as the smoky smell.
