On Wednesday night around 5:00pm, in the middle of rush hour in Monmouth County, power went out, completely out. It was a total blackout for nearly 50,000 residents in heart of the Jersey Shore. Overall, the outage only affected less than 5% of the 621,000 residents of Monmouth County, but it still created a lot of confusion for residents.

Asbury Park, Neptune, Neptune City, Ocean Grove, Bradley Beach, Ocean Township, Tinton Falls, Wall Township, Avon-by-the-Sea and Belmar all lost electric power. And of course, that also impacted all the businesses in that area, including the supermarkets like Stop & Shop, Wegmans, and Wawas. Even the gas stations stopped pumping gas because they didn’t have electricity.

The problem originated in a Hoenig substation located in Neptune. Power was finally restored to the region, with Bradley Beach and Neptune City being the last ones to get their power back, which was about 7:52 in the evening.

But until that point, everyone was literally in the dark. Power towers for mobile phones, traffic lights, bank cash machines were among some of the things that went on the blink. Police had to set up cones at main intersections blocking traffic, especially on some of the main roads including Route 33, Route 71 and Route 35.

The blackout also impacted mobile phones because the the towers supporting the transmission were all so affected.

There was a similar outage in Somerset County for Bedminster and Bridgewater. JCP&L stated that the two power blackouts had nothing to do with each other.
