Monmouth County, New Jersey has recorded 41 automobile accident fatalities in 2022. According to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, in just July alone, 13 people have died as a result of vehicular incidents. This number represents the highest number recorded since July 2014.
There are potentially several contributing factors leading to this higher number: a great deal of impatience of individuals exercised on the road due to post-pandemic anxiety, increased alcohol consumption and now, the introduction of cannabis distributed commercially in New Jersey.
According to one anecdotal source, one cannabis location in Monmouth County has done $80 million in business in just the last five months. Clearly there is no way to monitor when these individuals partake of the cannabis rage, but it seems now our roads, in Monmouth County have become significantly more dangerous.
Some steps can be taken to avoid or limit the number of such incidents: clearly driving with seatbelts on. Another safety tactic is to look twice both ways before moving through an intersection. A third safeguard is to avoid exceeding speed limits, especially within the Shore towns. Have an awareness that the Jersey Shore is, during these warmer months, a tourist mecca; many individuals may not be as familiar with the traffic patterns and the roads, thus creating situations where poor decision-making can contribute to vehicular accidents.
A fact that surrounds pedestrian fatalities is that each person who was struck was not walking within a crosswalk at the time of the accident.
