Facebook no longer attracts teens. According to a recent Pew study, the Gen Z population is clearly connected digitally.
The actual statistics from the Pew Research Center indicate that 32% of teens ages 13 to 17 years old use Facebook. This represents a significant decrease from the number reported back in 2014 to 2015, which was 71%.
Teens no longer see Facebook as relevant or functional for them. The competition for Generation Z’s attention is robust, with five strongly positioned social media platforms competing for their attention.
Facebook is associated with Generation Z’s parents. Teens view Facebook simply as an obligation rather than an exciting platform that they can participate in.
According to the Pew report, Facebook has seen that teenagers’ use of the Facebook app has fallen by 13% since 2019 and is expected to continue to fall by as much as 45% over the next few years. But it’s not all bad for Facebook: it seems that Instagram is not far behind TikTok in users.
According to this study, 62% of teens use Instagram, which is up from 52% back in 2015. TikTok is now used by 67% of all U.S. teens, and 95% of teens say they use YouTube, which appears to be the dominant social platform. Whether Facebook continues its downtrend in usage and in revenues is yet to be seen, but it clearly appears that Instagram has more relevance and traction for younger and even older users.
