The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection closed beaches including Normandy Beach section of Brick Township, Chadwick Beach section of Toms River, Mantoloking beaches, and the Maryland Avenue beach in Point Pleasant. These closures came about as the result of medical waste that had washed up along the shoreline. These swimming closures were taken in order to protect residents from the needles that had been discovered amongst various other debris including diabetic type syringes.

On Sunday, home-use diabetic-type syringes had also washed up at the Seven Presidents Park Beach in Long Branch and also in Monmouth Beach. The beaches reopened on Monday after an extensive cleanup that included beach raking and inspections by the Monmouth County Health Department. No additional medical debris were found.

The cause is attributed to combination of the heavy rainfall and the overflow of the systems that were shared underground discharging the untreated sewage into the water system. During such heavy rainfalls, systems tend to overflow, and discharge mixes sewage into the storm water of the waterways.

The beaches that were affected were raked several times on Wednesday and continue to be monitored. The Ocean County Health Department also inspected the beaches on Thursday to determine beach status, as to whether swimming would be permitted. In addition the beach patrols and lifeguards and other beach personnel in the area all stayed alert to notify the health authorities if additional materials were found.

In addition to medical debris, the ocean water is regularly checked and sampled to determine if it is safe for bathing, such as to determine levels of bacteria that might make it unsafe. According to individuals who monitor New Jersey beaches, New Jersey beaches maintain a 99% quality standard most of the time.
