The hottest real estate market recorded in history continues to drive revenues for title insurance underwriters to new record levels. The American Land Title Association reported that title insurers wrote nearly 45% more premiums in the first quarter of 2021 than in the first quarter of 2020. The surge in title insurance premiums directly corresponds to the boom in mortgage origination.
The record number of mortgage originations for the first quarter of 2021 topped $1 trillion. Title insurance premiums accounted for $5.68 billion during the first quarter of 2021, which is up from $3.92 billion from 2020. The first quarter of 2021 compared to the fourth quarter of 2020 shows a decrease in total mortgage originations from $1.34 trillion to $752 billion.
