Photo Of Man Drinking On MugOver the last six months a significant amount of your work time most likely has been working from home. Typically those individuals who have not established protocols for working from their house or apartment may find themselves to be less productive than in the office.

There were reasons for this.

Most likely you were used to certain routines that segregated the activities that were performed in certain environments. You came into the office. Hung up your coat. Got a cup of coffee and sat down at your desk.

These types of rituals don’t exist working from home. You can roll over from the bed to the boardroom in a bathrobe.

Those who have not developed healthy and effective visual guidelines for their work-from-home environment will find it difficult to get into a work-mode.

Punctuate Your Environment
Make sure that your home office is not decorated like the rest of your home. First thing to do is put up pictures that reflect the work environment. If it’s your company logo, great, put it up. If you have a couple group shots taken of you with your co-workers, those are also good. Do you have any awards? Get them on your walls. Whatever you have that will remind you of your work, your job title and anything else that doesn’t look like I’m sitting in the corner of a den.

It should also be far enough away from where the kids may be doing their homework and the kitchen, of course.

Don’t use the same desk that you have in your living room for your home office desk. Go out and get a stand-alone desk that looks different than the rest of your home decor.

Have an office clock hung on the wall. Make sure you enter your office on time and leave it on time.

Have a Post-It board on your wall that should have people to contact, projects to complete today, letters and invoices to get out.

Also each day of the week should have different activities assigned to it. Mondays are always get-back-in-the-saddle days, which require calling your top contacts, reviewing any articles that have been public, scheduling any meetings for the rest of the week.

When you schedule an out-of-the-office meeting, it has a way of punctuating the rest of the time that surrounds it. It gives more meaning to your activities in your home office and the activities completed out of your office.

Also when working from home, be intentional about setting up networking meetings. There are also webinars for help online. These may be helpful not only to you but those you are working with. Make them aware of events and activities that may be able to help them be more productive.
