Governor Phil Murphy announced that New Jersey’s beaches would reopen on May 22nd. This was an action taken in light of the fact that the shore economy was dependent upon its reopening.
There was some concern that the beaches would not open until much later in the summer. But since the contraction rate of the coronavirus appears to be flattening, the governor thought it best to reopen beaches as part of the state’s recovery plan.
As of May 14th, there were 9,946 deaths attributed to the coronavirus in New Jersey.
Social distancing will still be in effect in order to control the spread of the COVID-19 virus. In addition, certain beaches will be limiting the number of beach badges that are issued.
The governor also indicated that the number of new hospitalizations continues to trend down by nearly two-thirds from the peak levels.
Amusement parks and playgrounds will continue to remain closed. The beach and boardwalk restaurants will still have constraints placed on them, only permitting them to provide delivery service and carryout.
The New Jersey tourist industry was estimated to be $44.7 billion, which resulted in generating $5 billion in state and local taxes. It is estimated that the tourist industry supported approximately 334,000 jobs in the state. This obviously is going to change in 2020.
