We hear a great deal in the media today about gender gaps, but perhaps the most important gender gap of all is the alarming gap between women’s lifespan and men’s lifespan.
According to the new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), data shows that in 2017 the average male lifespan dropped to 76.1 years, which is down from 76.2 in 2016 and 76.5 in 2014.
Women, on the other hand, maintained a steady 81.1 years, which is the same that it was for both 2016 and 2015.
One of the reasons that men’s lifespan statistically falling has to do with a number of deaths referred to as deaths of Despair, which include drug overdoses and suicides. The CDC indicated that from 2007 to 2017, the death rate from drug overdoses nearly doubled from 12 to 21 deaths per 100,000.
Statistically deaths by suicide are also rising especially among men, where the death rate from suicide was 22.4 per 100,000.
American man still live longer than most men worldwide, where the average man in the world lives to be 69.8 years, and the average woman lives to 74.2 years, according to the World Health Organization.
