Fuel for the Brain to Burn
Scientists have discovered that the amount of fuel required by the brain to think and maintain bodily functions is extraordinarily high. So in the event that an individual’s cognizant and knowledge functions are being maxed out, the presumption that because there isn’t a lot of physical activity, there isn’t a lot of fuel required for thinking and working with one’s brain is a fallacy.

Neuroscientists will be the first people to tell you that your brain is responsible for consuming massive amounts of energy. In general the brain consumes between 20 and 25% of the body’s overall energy; that translates into 350 to 400 calories every day for the average man or woman. During childhood the brain is even more energy inefficient, so-to-speak, consuming 60% of the body’s energy.

Most of the energy consumption is due to the firing of synapses; thinking, in other words, every time we get a thought. So just imagine we have these little phones in our hands and we’re looking at them for 3 to 4 hours every day, how much energy is that consuming based upon the number of synapses firing that are occurring? This is crazy.

The more cognitive difficulty that an individual faces, the more that brain will require in terms of energy consumption.

So when it comes to learning, extra energy is required by the brain. That is why some people put off some learning functions of the job, not realizing that it’s not procrastination, it’s energy depletion. When you set out to learn a new technology, your brain will require an increase in energy transfer to whatever areas of the brain that are being activated by that training. Once that brain achieves what it needs to do, learns the function, the level of energy required at first will no longer be required.

So the next time you make a decision that you need to learn some new function or technology, begin to budget your energy and your time so that you can accomplish the very thing that you need to learn. We live in a knowledge economy, and those people who don’t know how to learn will ultimately be those people who don’t know how to earn.
