The day after Thanksgiving is not a public holiday but is a holiday in almost half the states in the U.S. and is given as a day off by most employers. It is termed ‘Black Friday’ coming from the understanding that many retailers in the past would go from being unprofitable to profitability with the rush of Christmas shoppers. In recent years, the phrase has made its way around America and is now a common name for the day after Thanksgiving.
