Monmouth County Deer Hunting

The bow and arrow hunters in New Jersey are permitted in Monmouth County parks through February 16th. Those hunters with shotguns will only be permitted for two dates: January 8th and January 10th. Those last two dates for muzzle-loader deer hunting will be permitted in Hartshorne Woods Park on January 8th and in Thompson Park on January 10th.

The park system has thus far never had an incident where someone was accidentally hit during hunting season. A good part of the reason for this is the signage within all the parks. The reason why there is this high safety feature with the hunting season in Monmouth County is that hunters are usually in their stands in the early morning or in the late afternoon, when the chances of individuals passing by during those times is very low.
During the 2017-18 hunting season, 604 deer were reported to have been taken, according to the final county report.

It is still necessary to obtain a permit to hunt in Monmouth County parks. Last year, the county gave out 889 hunting permits. The cost of a hunting permit is $25, which brings $22,225 into the park system coffers. Hunting season is clearly not just a sporting feature; it keeps the explosive deer population in check.

The good news about the explosive deer population in Monmouth County is that there has been an increase in the number of coyotes in the county. Coyotes are natural predators to the deer. According to county officials, there are more coyotes in the parks now than there have ever been.
